September 2008

A quick look back.

So here we are at the end of summer. I find myself somewhat disappointed that it was such a dud. Yeah, I did move into a new (for me, at least) house and, yeah, there’s that whole “making a baby” thing that will be ready for public viewing later this Fall. But overall the season feels like something of a wash.

By comparison, the previous summer my wife and I toured Sweden. We ended our trip in Stockholm. While there, we went to a show put on by The Ark. Three quarters into the set list with the sun doing that thing where it doesn’t really set but you know is wickedly late, the band breaks down a song. Instead of building it right back up, they play a simple melody while the singer substitutes in lyrics from some ancient Swedish folk song. The crowd sings along (of course they all know it). Quietly. Respectfully. The song then slowly builds intensity. When the band breaks back into the chorus of the song, the entire crowd is excited, jumping and singing along. It was a fantastic moment that I really cannot accurately describe.

Luckily, someone was there with a camera.

Note to me: next summer, more like this please.
